Admission Requirements for Graduate Studies

• 4-year degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) with a minimum average of 70%. (Typically students will have completed at least 12 undergraduate courses in computer science. See the list of required courses here.
• Evidence of English proficiency if English is not your first language: Preferred test - IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.  
•  A supplemental application with all the components is required. 

Note that graduate programs demand very strong English language skills.  While IELTS 6.5 (no bands less than 6.0) is the minimum requirement, a higher IELTS score may strengthen the application.

Recognized English Language Proficiency Tests

• Normally undergraduate Honours degree or equivalent concentration in the subject area (typically about 20 undergraduate courses in the subject area) 
• Minimum 70% average. 
• Language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6. Note that graduate programs demand very strong English language skills.  While IELTS 6.5 (no bands less than 6.0) is the minimum requirement, a higher IELTS score may strengthen the application. 
• A supplemental application with all the components is required.
• Admission is competitive.

Recognized English Language Proficiency Tests

MSc programs are for exceptional students who have demonstrated scholarly potential.  Meeting the minimum admission standards does not guarantee acceptance. 

• Normally an undergraduate Honours degree or equivalent concentration in the subject area (typically about 20 undergraduate courses in the subject area). Examples of related disciplines might include Irish Studies, degrees in the various Celtic languages (Irish, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Breton), History, Linguistics and English, with a specialization in medieval culture. 

• Minimum 70% average. 

• Language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6. 

• A supplemental application with all the components is required.

• Thesis-based Masters are for exceptional students who have demonstrated scholarly potential.  Meeting the minimum admission standards does not guarantee acceptance.

For regular admission to the Master of Education program, candidates shall normally have:

1. completed a Bachelor of Education degree or its equivalent.
2. earned an average of at least 70% in the BEd Program or have placed in the top 25% of the BEd graduating class and,
3. completed at least two years of successful teaching before enrolling in the first graduate course.

Considerable weight will also be given to the references and letter of intent supplied by the applicant as well as successful teaching experience .

Individuals who do not possess a Bachelor of Education degree will normally be considered when they have:

1. gained a teaching license equivalent to a Nova Scotia Initial Certificate (TC5) or been employed in a teaching capacity for at least two years in a professional school or post-secondary institution
2. met all other admission conditions

• In either case, a supplemental application with all the components is required.

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not ensure acceptance into the program. Decisions of the Admissions Committee are final. You are responsible to check with the StFX Admissions Office (902 867-2219 / 1 (844) 299-2527 / @email), to make sure your official transcripts and reference letters have arrived. Incomplete files will not be considered for admission.

NOVA SCOTIA TEACHER CERTIFICATION: Nova Scotia teachers are advised to apply for program pre-approval prior to starting their studies as per the Nova Scotia Department of Education instructions.

This program is for you if:

• You want to combine your educational background and professional experience with expertise in adult education;
• Have a related Bachelor's degree with a minimum overall B grade;
• Have at least 2 years of experience working with adults or in the field of community development;
• Want a program that is part time, online, flexible and affordable

For applicants whose first language is not English, or whose normal language of instruction has been other than English, a test of English language proficiency may be required.

Recognized English Language Proficiency Tests

Applicants with an incomplete undergraduate degree who have significant practitioner experience in adult education/community development may be considered for special admission if they provide evidence of: 

• Having completed a minimum of 3 (3-credit) undergraduate university courses and have extensive experience working with adults in an educational setting for at least five years.
• Having been recognized for 'exceptional' contributions in their professional practice or community development work.

Individuals seeking entry under this special admission provision should contact the Chair of the Department of Adult Education to inquire about the criteria, processes, and timelines for admission via this route.
