Elizabeth McGibbon
Dr. Elizabeth McGibbon, PhD, RN, is a Full Professor, Rankin School of Nursing, St. Francis Xavier University, and Research Associate, Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives. An applied critical health social scientist, she focuses on the political economy of health, complexity science applications in health, and how public policy created oppression “gets under the skin” to create inter-generational health damage for racialized and marginalized peoples - while enhancing privilege and wealth for the very few. She led the national research project Mapping Health Equity in Canadian Public Policy Discourses (SSHRC, Completed, 2023) and was co-researcher in a large Two-Eyed Seeing study to diversify dialogue and understanding of Manitoban First Nations Peoples’ heart health (CIHR, PI: A. Schultz, Completed, 2019). Dr. McGibbon was one of three leads in establishing the National Collaborating Center, Determinants of Health (NCCDH, with Drs. D. Gillis & L. Hallstrom). She published the first Canadian books on Oppression: A Social Determinant of Health (2nd Ed., 2021), and Anti-Racist Health Care Practice (with Dr. J. Etowa, 2009; 2nd Ed. in Progress). Her anti-racism, decolonial research has been recommended in the Canadian Senate and she is an invited author and collaborator for 24 chapters in multiple-edition critical health studies books in Canada, the US, and the UK. Along with social justice colleagues, awards include recognition from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission for anti-racism community action and municipal policy intervention, and the Canadian Armed Forces for refugee medical humanitarian work. She is a late-career entrant to academia after almost 20 years of clinical practice in large institutions and communities. Her work has been accessed by people in over 60 countries in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia (Research Gate metrics).
