Charlene Weaving
Dr. Weaving hails from Florenceville, New Brunswick. Weaving graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Kinesiology in 1999. Weaving played varsity rugby while at Acadia and continued to play during her Masters and PhD studies at Western University. Weaving completed her PhD in 2005 and analysed the case of women athletes posing nude. Weaving moved to the “Nish” in 2005, and in 2007 was awarded the STFX Outstanding Teaching Award for the Faculty of Science. Weaving has published research on the sexualization of women in sport (Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, ESPN Body Issue & beach volleyball uniform regulations); gender equity issues (sex verification & doping), and women athletes and stereotypes/frailty myths (pregnant athletes & menstruation). In 2013, Weaving was awarded the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport (IAPS) Heather Reid Distinguished Service Award (and served as Secretary-Treasurer and President for the Association). Weaving enjoys canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing and skiing with her family including the two bearded collies: Bilodeau and Screefer.
