StFX professor and chair of the economics department, Dr. Joe Amoako-Tuffour, has been invited to join experts in a conference in South Sudan this October to deliberate on the management of the country’s oil resources.
South Sudan became independent in July 2011, becoming the 196th country in the world, the 193rd member of UN, and now the 55th country in Africa.
Dr. Amoako-Tuffour will present a paper on Ghana’s experience in developing legislative framework and administrative bodies to govern the management of Ghana’s oil revenue.
In April 2011, Dr. Amoako-Tuffour was invited to join the newly created Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the Oxford University-based Natural Resource Charter.
The Charter is a set of principles designed to assist resource-rich countries to effectively harness the opportunities and long-term benefits of their oil, gas and mining resources for the betterment of their citizens.
The TAG consists of around 30 members and is under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Michael Spence. It meets annually at Oxford to provide and consolidate inputs for the Charter’s work. Since 2008, Dr. Amoako-Tuffour has been involved in developing the legislative framework and institution building in Ghana’s emerging petroleum industry.
