StFX students interested in a career in health and wellness have an opportunity to learn firsthand about career opportunities and meet individuals who have worked in this area when the StFX Student Career Services and The Mentoring Plus Strategy host “Meet, Eat & Mingle with Health Professionals” on March 21.
The session takes place from 5:15-6:30 p.m. in Schwartz 156 and is open to all students, in all programs and all years of study.
It’s free to attend and pizza will be served.
“We know how valuable it can be to connect with someone with experience in the field you’re entering, so we provide students with the opportunity to meet with mentors/retired health professionals in a group mentoring setting. This also allows students to connect with others aspiring to a career in the health care sector or thinking of this as a career path,” says Mentoring Plus Strategy coordinator Geralyn MacDonald.
Executive director Gordon Michael says the focus for the strategy is to connect the knowledge and skills of retirees/near retirees 55+ with individuals 16 and over. “We believe the connections will provide an opportunity to explore many career paths, the challenges and opportunities that exist, as we reflect on the past, present and into the future of the changing world of work.”
StFX Students Career Services director Jane MacDonald says they are excited to help organize this event and she encourages students to attend. “When individuals are exploring career options, mentorship is a great strategy to interact with individuals who are in roles that are of interest.”
The event will feature six panelists—including a family physician, a pharmacist, dental surgeon, nurse manager and a palliative care volunteer—who will speak about careers in the health care field. Students will have a chance to meet and speak with panelists at the end of the event.
Panelists include Bill Skinner, a semi-retired community pharmacist; Margaret-Ellen Disney, a palliative care volunteer; Dr. Rod Stevenson, a retired family physician; Tish Campbell, a nurse manager and clinical consultant; Dr. Thomas Disney, a retired oral maxillofacial dental surgeon; and Debbie Murray, a retired nurse manager.
