We are surrounded by complex and challenging public policy issues. From climate change to economic competition, poverty, racial and gender inequality, safety and security threats – the list is long and can be overwhelming. The Public Policy and Governance program is designed to prepare you for a career shaping policy, with the skills and tools required to tackle these challenges and the issues you care about.
The PGOV program was launched in September 2017 to provide students with a focused undergraduate education in public policy and governance. One of a few of its kind in Canada, the program offers an interdisciplinary education to help students understand how societies solve difficult economic, social, and political problems – and how we organize ourselves to ensure good governance.
PGOV classes focus on building core research and communication skills. Students are trained in effective writing geared to a professional audience, writing briefing notes, policy analysis, and memoranda. In the summer of the third year, students will also take an internship (with competitive funding opportunities) to build connections and gain experience doing hands-on work in a policy setting.
In partnership with the Brian Mulroney Institute of Government, the PGOV program also prepares students through a series of opportunities outside the classroom. This includes field trips and experiential learning with government partners, as well as research opportunities that can include editorial, analytical, or writing positions working on real-world policy projects.
Whether you’re a current or prospective student, we invite you to explore the unique offerings of Public Policy and Governance at StFX.
