State-of-the-art 3D printing technology
The StFX University Machine Shop is home to a new 3D printer that will enhance research and learning for the campus community. The multi-unit Formlabs system uses Stereolithography (SLA), a process in which a light source cures liquid resin, hardening it layer by layer. It can print many types of 3D models for professional and academic applications – from bone and muscle replicas to flow cells, robots, part replacements and engineering models. It is a fast and efficient printer with smooth surface finishes and high dimensional accuracy.
The new 3D printing system includes the following components:
- Form 3L (Large) printer
- Form 3+ (Small) printer
- Form wash and form cure units
- PreForm 3D printing software
- Resins including draft, greyscale, clear, colour and grey pro

Frequently asked questions
What is 3D printing?
3D printing is the process of creating physical objects from a digital model. This technology has been around since the 1980s, used mostly by engineers and industry designers.
Where is the 3D printer located?
StFX's new 3D resin printer is located in the University Machine Shop, Rm 1054, Nasso Family Science Centre (downstairs from the main floor).
Who can use the 3D printer?
The 3D resin printer is available for use by StFX students, faculty and staff. Print jobs can be charged to University accounts where applicable.
What is the cost of printing?
The cost of any print will be a combination of a fixed cost and variable cost per milliliter (mL) of volume of resin used. Depending on the dimensions of your print the 3+ or 3L printer will be used. The startup cost are $25 and $45 for 3+ and 3L respectively and 0.6 is the variable cost factor per 1 mL of resin. As an example, if you require a 3+ printing and 100 mLs of resin, the cost will be $25+100*0.6 = $85.
