Under a theme this year of “Connections-Kontakte,” the StFX German classes and the German Society came together March 21 to celebrate the 18th German Day at StFX.
Myka Burke, Officer of Culture and Communication at the German Embassy in Ottawa, sent greetings via Teams. StFX President Dr. Andy Hakin and Department of Modern Languages chair Dr. Wojciech Tokarz also addressed the students and commended them for their efforts to connect through languages.
“Students prepared engaging, inspiring presentations about their connections with Germany. Danny Guhl, president of Solvest, a 2017 StFX alumnus, a DAAD Youth Ambassador, and a student of the German class, shared his experiences with us via Teams from Whitehorse,” says StFX German coordinator Marlis Lade.
“Presentations also covered German specialties and football in Germany, and students shared their connection with Germany. Shuaiyu Chen from China and Berkay Ozturk from Turkey presented on the German composer, J.S. Bach, while Loic Montille from Mauritius performed a Bach serenade. German Society student president Laurianne Riffault invited students and guests to participate in the annual quiz, which was well received. Everyone enjoyed both the presentations and the German cake and sweets afterwards.”

“The day has been a fantastic opportunity for students to build their skills and confidence and for everyone to understand each other better,” says Ms. Riffault, who is a student in German 301.
Classmate Zechariah Willems echoed the sentiment. “The Annual German Day is an engaging and inspiring way for students to experience German culture.”

Three students in German 102, Allie Fennel, Lucy Henkel, and Kim Robertson also said ‘Danke schön.’ “Everyone's presentations were fantastic.”
