Program Overview:
About Biology
Biology is the science of living organisms and their interactions with the world around us. Through a balanced curriculum of work in the classroom, the field, and the lab, studying Biology at StFX will give you an understanding of the structure and function of living things - from the cell to global ecological systems. Delve with us into the science of living organisms to explore the world and the influence humans have on the global environment.
Why Study Biology at StFX?
At StFX, students acquire extensive knowledge through classroom learning led by dynamic professors who will encourage engagement with exciting new perspectives in analyzing the fundamentals of biology. Our curriculum also goes beyond the classroom, as we take advantage of StFX’s geographic location and incorporate fieldwork in order for our students to acquire valuable hands-on experience.
Biology is an extraordinarily diverse field. In order to assist students in focusing their efforts, the Biology Department offers six areas of concentration. These concentrations are:
- Health Sciences
- Ecology
- Cell and Molecular Biology
- Animal Biology
- Plant Biology
- Aquatic Biology
Students may further customize their education by selecting from a number of offered degree patterns, including:
- Major Program
- Advanced Major Program
- Honours Program
Joint programs of study are also available with Psychology, Chemistry, Math and Physics.
First Year at a Glance
In the first year of study, students take Introductory Cell Biology and Diversity of Life: in-depth courses that acquaint students with fundamental areas of the field. Students explore cell biology, basic genetics, major groups of living organisms and evolution, and more. These introductory courses prepare students for the increasingly diverse subjects that exist within the upper years of the Biology Department.
Future Opportunities
Biology graduates may pursue master's and doctoral-level study in top medical, dental, veterinary and other schools around the world. Well-trained and educated biologists (or life scientists) are in demand all over the world. An undergraduate degree in Biology prepares students for careers in areas such as:
- Aquatic Biology
- Cell and Molecular Biology
- Ecology
- Education
- Health Sciences
The career opportunities available to Biology graduates are diverse and include opportunities, such as:
- Biotechnology
- Education / Teacher
- Environmental Consultant
