Catholic Studies Awards and Bursaries for 2021-22
The StFX Catholic Studies program is pleased to announce the names of the recipients of the Catholic Studies Awards for 2021-22.
Students Grace Lazzuri of Antigonish, Jordan Morgan of Oshawa, ON, Emilie Risdon of Bathurst, NB, and Sarah Turnbull of Ancaster, ON received awards of between $500 and $1,500 each. (Pictured above)
The purpose of these awards is to recognize and assist students who have an active interest in Catholic studies, philosophy, or moral theology, particularly as these subjects reflect the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The awards commemorate Archie and Catherine MacPhee, the parents of Rev. Norman MacPhee, and Father Bernard A. MacDonald, who was professor of moral theology at StFX until his death in February 1998.
Professor William Sweet, interim coordinator of the Catholic Studies program said that “though Catholic Studies is a small program at StFX, there has been an increased interest in its courses from students from all faculties. Catholic Studies courses are not just for Catholics, and its courses are taken by students from a wide range of disciplines. Aside from our two introductory courses, popular courses include ‘Christianity and Science,’ ‘Catholicism in Canada,’ ‘The End of the World in the Catholic Tradition,’ and ‘Angels and Demons.’
Dr. Sweet added that “offering these bursaries and awards allows the university to recognize and to offer some financial support to students in good academic standing who, in their studies and related activities, are interested in understanding key aspects of the Catholic faith. Catholic Studies is very grateful for the generosity of the donors and the legacy of those in whose name the awards and bursaries are offered. These awards and bursaries served to help students in their intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth.”
