About X-PATROL:

The StFX X-PATROL team is composed of 70+ highly motivated student leaders capable of working in high-performance environments. X-PATROL was established to provide a safe and secure environment while promoting the Community Code and protecting the campus' liquor license. X-PATROL works with students and administrators to ensure that all students, staff, and visitors can enjoy a safe and positive experience while on the university's campus.   

X-PATROL frequently works in partnership with Conference Services, Residence Life, The U Student Union, Alumni Affairs, Facilities Management, and other university departments. 

X-PATROL Members Must Have the Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively.
  • Maintain good academic standing and always comply with the St. Francis Xavier Community Code of Conduct. 
  • Be available to work a minimum of two patrols per month.
  • Be available during big events & SuperSubs.
  • Think critically and make important decisions on the spot. 
  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time. 
  • Read files, documents, computer screens, and identify personnel on the spot or in photos. 
  • Be in close contact with large groups of people - while following public health and safety protocols.

What We Do:

Members of X-PATROL work alongside the Safety and Security Officers to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and university guests. They perform a variety of duties, are entrusted with confidential material, and can perform effectively in social situations.  

Some of the specific duties the X-PATROL members perform are…  

Campus Patrols:  

  • Ensure all those on the St. FX campus abide by the Community Code and document any code violations.  
  • Provide safety by giving first-aid to those in need and providing safe "walk-homes" to students who live on-campus. 
  • Liaison with and assist RCMP, EHS, and/or Fire Department personnel and provide additional support for events when necessary. 
  • Cheerily greet passing students, faculty, staff, and guests when appropriate.  

Event Supervision:  

  • Ensure all patrons abide by the Community Code and document any code or alcohol policy violations. 
  • Always keep alcohol within licensed areas and ensure no alcohol is brought on-site from an outside source. 
  • Enforce event-specific boundaries and rules and ensure all patrons are 19 or older for events with alcohol present. 
  • Remove intoxicated or otherwise uncooperative, violent, or disruptive individuals from events.

Dr. Lavinia Stan, Political Science, is newest European Research Area Chair
Dr. Lavinia Stan

Thirty-eight new ERA Chairs are to be appointed by the European Commission this year; one of them is Dr. Lavinia Stan from the Department of Political Science. The European Research Area (ERA) Chairs, which are financed for five years to the tune of 2.5 million Euros each as part of the HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-TALENTS-01, are senior academics with outstanding expertise in their fields of study. As the new Chair, Lavinia Stan, together with Drs. Ionela Vlase and Mihaela Herciu, will build a research team of professors, post-docs and doctoral students working at the intersection of church, state and body politics at the Universitatea Lucian Blaga of Sibiu, Romania. Lucian Blaga (1895-1961) was one of the most important Romanian philosophers, a poet, playwright and novelist. In addition to supervising students, conducting relevant research, and advising the university on its gender policy, Lavinia Stan will impart her knowledge as Editor-in-Chief of two prestigious peer-reviewed academic journals, Women’s Studies International Forum (published by Elsevier) as well as East European Politics and Societies (which appears with Sage). Meanwhile she continues her research on transitional justice for competing pasts, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada with a five-year grant.

Service Learning Student Research Award
Kathleen Dolan was awarded the Service Learning Student Research Award.

We want to congratulate Kathleen Dolan for being awarded the Service Learning Students Research Award. Kathleen participated in Student Research Night this year. Kathleen is a Health Student who did her research on 'Primary Care Providers Perceptions on Social Prescribing in Rural and Urban Nova Scotia'.

"Social Prescribing (SP) is an approach to health where healthcare-workers connect patients to a range of nonclinical community services to support the social determinants of health (SDH). Around 20% patients seek physicians for social-related issues. And while 90% of Canadian physicians screen their patients for social needs, 36% are unaware of what services are available in their community. Evidence of SP in other countries found that it reduces physician and emergency room visits, and hospital and secondary care referrals, demonstrating the effectiveness of SP in enhancing patient health and reducing health-system pressures.

Through qualitative methodology and phenomenological design, this study aims to identify the perceptions of primary care providers on SP and explore general knowledge of and perceived barriers and facilitators to implementing SP in Nova Scotia through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis.

Understanding perceived challenges and facilitators may help to better inform future SP models in NS and help improve the uptake and satisfaction of these models among PCPs."

We asked Kathleen what community means to her. We had to share her response.

"Volunteering and engaging with the community goes without question. I have been privileged enough to have had so many opportunities to get involved with community organizations and engage with community members.  It has truly become part of who I am today.  My community here has taught me to learn from and listen to others. Being involved in the community can allow you to expand your perspective, but also to reconnect with feelings of empathy and compassion towards others, something that is lost in the stressful and competitive university environment. Community is so valuable and being part of this community has taught me the power of people when you bring them together and what impact people can have by simply sharing their voices. It has truly taught me than an interconnected community has the power to do great things"
