Amelia Saputo Centre renovation delays

The Amelia Saputo Centre is currently in the final phase of renovations. This phase includes many new benefits for students, faculty, staff and the broader Antigonish community such as new locker rooms, a new and expanded fitness centre, updated auxiliary gym, multipurpose rooms, classrooms and much more. The renovations also include a new high-performance centre for varsity student-athletes.

We are sorry to announce that we are experiencing a delay in the completion of this phase due to labour shortages and supply chain issues. The timelines related to the renovations have been adjusted and the building will reopen in stages and with a new estimated completion date of January 2024.

The reopening stages include:

  • Coach K Court and the auxiliary gym will open the weeks of September 11 and 25 respectively.
  •  The fitness centre, high-performance fitness centre, and public locker rooms will be completed and ready for use in early December.
  • The remaining areas, including multipurpose rooms, the Alumni Aquatic Centre and front entrance to the Saputo Centre are slated to open in January 2024.

X-Rec and StFX Ancillary Services will be working to provide programing, including intramurals starting in early September. Please check the GoXGo.ca website for updates and activities over the coming weeks.

We appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we work through this unforeseen delay. On a related note, the university is reviewing the sports and recreation fee charged to students and a partial refund will be placed in student accounts later this term.

If you have any questions about the delayed reopening, please contact Kevin Benjamin, @email.
